Fall Break

…and the journey goes on… We’re heading in to Fall Break (which always messes me up). But maybe, just maybe, I’ll have a chance to get caught up a little. But I’m leaning toward doing nothing at all today. Kind of a strange week. I had midterms for two classes, but wound up putting off the third ’till next week. The College of Business and … Continue reading Fall Break »

Internet! Oh Internet! Whither Art Thou?

Well, something interesting happened today. No, let me back up…yesterday afternoon, we lost connection to the Internet for about five hours. I power-cycled my modem and router, and we got it back. But trying to browse to several sites resulted in a ‘…could not resolve DNS’ error. It was like that here for most of the day, even after another power-cycling. In the midst of … Continue reading Internet! Oh Internet! Whither Art Thou? »

Updates

As you may have guessed, things got pretty hectic toward the end of the semester. I’ve been wanting to post, but just haven’t had the time. All-in-all, the students did pretty well this spring. And I made an ‘A’ in my class (Human Computer Interaction). But it got pretty busy there, for a while. The Minecraft server (jram-mcs.ml) is still up and running,  but it … Continue reading Updates »

Catching Up

Ah! Sunday. Cloudy, dreary…blessed Day of Rest! Next week is Spring Break. I totaled up my time in college as a student the other day. Fifteen years. Fifteen years in one classroom or another (not counting my time at the academy, for which I did receive college credit — ha ha). And in all that time, I have not once traveled out of town for … Continue reading Catching Up »

Meh.

I think I’m coming down with a cold. Meh. Several days, now, I’ve awoken with a sore throat, stuffy nose, coughing, etc. It eases up as the day goes on (yesterday, I started on Dayquil)…but it still sucks. The semester’s winding down. Fortunately, today my class is doing presentations for their research projects, so I won’t have to talk a lot. My system administration class … Continue reading Meh. »

New Discoveries

So I’ve been enjoying several new discoveries lately. It all started when I got tired of the music I’d been listening to and learned again that my favorite podcaster,  Dan Carlin, hasn’t posted anything new. So I decided to look for podcasts related to Linux. Believe it or not, I found several. So far, the best among them has been the Linux Action Show by … Continue reading New Discoveries »

Sysinternals

So I got a book to read over the break, co-authored by Mark Russinovich and Aaron Margosis, entitled Windows Sysinternals Administrators Guide. From a geek point of view, it’s very interesting. For those of you who are not familiar, Sysinternals is a suite of Windows applications developed over the years by Russinovich and some of his associates. They are available for free from Microsoft (who in … Continue reading Sysinternals »

The Dark Side

Well, I finally gave in to the temptation of the dark side. This year, my bd present to me is a new Apple iMac. Interestingly, I’m learning that it isn’t as much of a Klingon OS as I thought it would be, given my past several years’ dabbling into the Linux OS. And it sure has some nice features built right in. I got interested in … Continue reading The Dark Side »
