Changes

A friend asked me for some help with his WordPress site yesterday, which kind of rekindled my interest in this one. I’ve made some changes ‘under-the-hood,’ which shouldn’t be obvious to you, the visitor. There are a few more I want to do, but its been a long day. We’re now running on Ubuntu 18.04 and PHP 7.2. Tomorrow, maybe, I’m going to upgrade the distro to 20.04. It’s pretty time consuming, though. The other big change I want to do is add a certificate to secure the site. That, too, is a lengthy process, but it needs to be done.

I also renewed my subscription with Akismet anti-spam — the site’s been getting blown up with spam for a while. So I hope it helps.

Obviously, I also changed the banner, finally eliminating the misspelling that’s been there for years. It’s hard to believe this site is almost eight years old…especially given the paucity of posts. But maybe that’ll change. I dunno.

I still don’t have a whole lot to talk about. It’s been a crazy couple of years. Lots of drama – little of which I’m interested in sharing with the world. The upside is that I’m in a much better place, now. Love my job, though it hasn’t been without challenges in the past few months, what with COVID-19 and the quarantine.

Another upside to the quarantine has been that I’ve been spending so little money, sitting on the couch all day, I’ve been able buy a couple of nice toys. The best of them is this Alienware laptop I’m typing this post on. The single most expensive computer I’ve ever bought. Maybe will ever buy. It’s pretty awesome, and not just for gaming.

I also got a brand-spankin’ new Colt Gold Cup .45 – a gun I’ve wanted for years. It’s pretty sweet, and I can’t wait to shoot it.

My summer class is going ok, with three students. We’re two weeks in, now and working on Bootstrap. Sass is next. Then, the really fun stuff — JavaScript and jQuery. I’m pretty stoked about it. Also getting ready for the new class I’m scheduled to teach in the fall – PC Maintenance and Repair. It’s one of those topics I know well, but have never tried to teach. Mike Lehrfeld, who’s been teaching it but is on sabbatical this fall, is going to forward his course materials, but I haven’t gotten them yet. So, I’ve been reading the text in preparation. It’s actually pretty interesting stuff.

I’ve been watching the CBS series Picard on the recommendation of a friend for the past couple of days. I never got into TNG, but it’s a pretty good show..so much so that I have a hard time getting any work done while it’s on the TV.

Anyway, that’s all for now. I’m seriously avoiding talking about current affairs, other than the last post. A situation that is so ludicrous as to defy description. The world keeps spinning, spinning, spinning. Eventually the dust will settle. Of that, I am sure
